At Big Cabin, we’ve always believed that the best materials are those that work with nature, not against it. That’s why we’re excited to share our latest evolution in timber: Thermally Modified (TM) wood - a high-performance, chemical-free material that’s as durable as it is beautiful. But what makes this story truly special isn’t just the wood itself. It’s how - and where - it’s made.

What Is Thermally Modified Wood?

Thermal modification is a process that uses heat, steam, and AI controlled operations to transform wood at the cellular level. By carefully heating the wood in a low-oxygen environment, we reduce its ability to absorb moisture, increase its dimensional stability, and enhance its resistance to decay and insects - all without adding a single chemical.

The result is a product that performs like tropical hardwood, but is made from local species and remains 100% natural.

A Local Approach to a Global Innovation

Thermally modified wood has been used in Europe for decades, especially in climates where durability and sustainability are essential. But here in the West, it’s still a relatively new concept — and that’s where Big Cabin comes in.

We’ve built something rare: a fully local, vertically integrated TM wood operation. From the moment a tree is harvested in our region to the final milling of a custom board, every step happens right here in the Northwest. That means:

  • No overseas shipping or long delays - just reliable, regional supply.
  • Custom sizes that are hard to find elsewhere: up to 30 feet long, 16 inches wide, and 4 inches thick.
  • A smaller carbon footprint, thanks to shorter transport distances and energy-efficient processing.
  • A 20-year guarantee, supported by local partners who know the product inside and out.
  • Faster access to additional materials, because we’re just down the road - not across an ocean or a continent.

This local model isn’t just about logistics. It’s about accountability, sustainability, and building a product that reflects the values of the place it comes from.

Built for the Northwest

Our TM wood is particularly well-suited to the Northwest’s demanding climate. It resists swelling and shrinking through wet winters and dry summers, holds finishes longer, and weathers with grace. Whether you’re designing a modern retreat or restoring a heritage structure, it offers the kind of performance and character that only real wood can deliver.

And because we work with local species, we’re not just reducing environmental impact - we’re also supporting regional forestry and craftsmanship. It’s a material that tells a story of place, resilience, and respect for the land.

Material That Makes Sense

In a time when supply chains are stretched and sustainability matters more than ever, Thermally Modified Wood offers a smarter path forward. It’s a product that performs beautifully, lasts for decades, and supports the communities that make it.

At Big Cabin, we’re proud to be part of that story — and even prouder to share it with you.
